The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists says humanity has never been closer to catastrophe. The Prophet ﷺ described this moment fourteen centuries ago, and the Qur’an already gave us the way through it.
We are living through a strange kind of certainty about uncertainty. Some people live in the shadow of war and famine; others live comfortably in industrialised nations, cushioned from it all. Yet almost everyone, everywhere, shares the same quiet feeling: that the world is drawing toward some kind of end.
That feeling is not new. The Companions of the Prophet ﷺ lived with the same awareness of the Day of Judgment hanging over their lives, and it did not paralyse them. It steadied them. It made them more resolute, not less, in how they lived. Because the Prophet ﷺ was not speaking from guesswork; he was describing what was shown to him, and his description of “the end of time” reads less like ancient history and more like this morning’s news.
A Hadith That Reads Like Tomorrow’s Headlines
In a hadith reported in the two most trusted collections, Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim, the Prophet ﷺ said that as the Hour draws near, time itself would seem to move faster: a year passing like a month, a month like a week. He said that religious knowledge would be lifted, not because books disappear, but because people would stop returning to the Qur’an and the Sunnah for answers and start outsourcing their questions to whatever a search engine, or today, an AI system, hands back to them. He said fitna, trial and corruption, would spread into everything, touching even something as universal and beloved as football, where cheating, greed and hostility now shadow the game. And he said that al-harj, bloodshed, would become widespread in a way it had never been before.
Fourteen hundred years later, none of that requires much imagination to recognise.
The World Built Its Own Doomsday Clock
In 1947, in the shadow of the first atomic bombs, a group of scientists, including some of the very physicists who had helped build those weapons, created a symbolic clock to track how close humanity stood to self-destruction. They called it the Doomsday Clock. Midnight represents catastrophe.
On 27 January 2026, the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists set that clock at 85 seconds to midnight, four seconds closer than the year before, and the nearest it has ever stood to midnight in its history. Their stated reasons: collapsing arms-control treaties, increasingly aggressive nuclear powers, and leadership failing to act on the risks in front of it.
A secular committee of scientists, using entirely worldly measures, arrived at a picture of the world that the Prophet ﷺ had already described in a single hadith. That convergence is worth sitting with.
Two Kinds of Survival
Faced with talk of nuclear risk and civilizational collapse, a whole culture of physical survivalism has grown up around us: courses on living without electricity, without running water, without the systems we take for granted. That instinct is understandable. But the Qur’an points us toward a survival that matters more: spiritual survival. Not just outlasting a crisis, but keeping our faith, our character, and our practice intact through it, and passing that intact faith on to the next generation.

Whatever ˹pleasure˺ you have been given is ˹no more than a fleeting˺ enjoyment of this worldly life. But what is with Allah is far better and more lasting for those who believe and put their trust in their Lord.
who avoid major sins and shameful deeds, and forgive when angered.
who respond to their Lord, establish prayer, conduct their affairs by mutual consultation, and donate from what We have provided for them.
and who enforced justice when they are wronged.
The reward of an evil deed is its equivalent. But whoever pardons and seeks reconciliation, then their reward is with Allah. He certainly does not like the wrongdoers.
There is no blame on those who enforce justice after being wronged.
Blame is only on those who wrong people and transgress in the land unjustly. It is they who will suffer a painful punishment.
And whoever endures patiently and forgives—surely this is a resolve to aspire to.
Put together, these eight verses draw a single line through a chaotic world: hold this life loosely, place your trust in Allah, stay clear of major sin, master your anger, answer when you’re called, pray, consult one another, give freely, and when you are wronged, know that you may stand your ground — but that patience and forgiveness are the higher path.
As one scholar put it simply: don’t let a world of wolves turn you into a sheep, and don’t let a world of sheep turn you into a wolf. Hold your ground without losing your mercy.
The Doomsday Clock can move backward or forward depending on what people do. Our own spiritual clock works the same way. The Hour is not something we can stop, but how we meet it, with faith intact or without it, is still very much in our hands.
